Jaguar recall for air bag tear

Jaguar is recalling 2,409 of its 2021-2023 E-Pace vehicles. In the NHTSA report, the automaker said the passenger air bag may tear during deployment. When an airbag is torn, it may not protect a person in a crash. This can increase the risk of injury. Hot gasses can exit a torn air bag and burn an occupant.

Jaguar drivers will receive a free service from their dealers. Mechanics will replace the passenger air bag module. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent out on June 14. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar’s number for this recall is H491.

BMW recall for air bag rupture

BMW is recalling 5,761 of its 2014-2015 vehicles. In NHTSA report, the company said that the head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint which can cause gas to leak from the inflator or cause a rupture. If an inflator ruptures, it may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle. In addition, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash. Both defects will increase the risk of injury.

For free, dealers will replace the head air bags. Recall notification letters are expected to be mailed out on June 14. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Vehicle Recalls: Hyundai, BMW, Jaguar

In recent years, a trend has emerged in which manufacturers are recalling a great number of vehicles in order to fix problems that have been found to be a source of difficulty for the vehicles’ owners. This is the case with Hyundai, as well as BMW and Jaguar. Whether due to a design flaw or something overlooked in production, many of Hyundai’s vehicles have been recalled for front passenger airbags that may deploy with excessive force, posing a risk of injury to a small-statured adult or child.

This recall affects over 140,000 vehicles (Hyundai), and a known solution is still pending. A second problem with Hyundai’s 2011 Sonata sedans sparked another recall, this time in regard to side curtain airbags that may inflate without deployment in the event of a side impact, not properly protecting the passenger.

Expected results for this recall are to begin in April, with Hyundai dealers installing new side airbags on vehicles. An entirely different difficulty was reported in late March 2013 stating that Hyundai Santa Fe Sports built between July 13, 2012, and March 20, 2013, may have a fastener for a front seat belt anchor that was not fully attached, on the driver or front passenger-seat side of the seat belt. This last problem will be addressed by dealers in the immediate future, concerned with the safety of its customers.

Relating to a different problem entirely, certain 2006 3 Series BMWs have been recalled, as well as a limited number of 2006 and 2007 5 Series and M5 BMWs. These vehicles may have an incorrect airbag inflater, affecting the airbag deployment in a crash. In the worst-case scenario, metal fragments could fly out of the airbag system when deployed, causing other damage to the vehicle and possible injury to passengers.

Though the number of vehicles reported to have the problematic inflater is limited, BMW plans to replace front airbags in all potentially affected vehicles. The solution to this issue is known by BMW, but no incidents have been reported to date. The same cannot be said for the previously reported difficulty with 2000 through 2003 BMW 3 Series vehicles and 2000 and 2001 5 Series BMWs. These vehicles have airbag systems with an airbag inflator that could produce too much internal pressure. In the event of a crash, this could cause the inflator to rupture.

In the past, this problem has led to US Department of Transportation and NHTSA investigations in which BMW was forced to recall approximately 116,000 of the same vehicles mentioned in the year 2013, in an effort to further prevent fragmentation and metal dispersion injuries. Although this is a separate recall, BMW dealers will address previous 3 and 5 Series airbag difficulties by replacing the airbag systems, specifically to increase the safety of its long-time customers.
